Sparking systemic change: Slavery in supply chains

Last week the UK Government committed to implementing more ideas presented by Justice and Care, in its response to calls to strengthen action against slavery in supply chains.
The Transparency in Supply Chains (TISC) consultation on toughening Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 took place exactly a year ago as a result of the Independent Review of the Act.
Christian Guy, our CEO, was appointed as an Expert Adviser to the Review, making recommendations to the Government on how to strengthen and enhance the legislation as the crime of modern slavery and human trafficking is uncovered and better understood.
As a result of the Independent Review, in total 13 recommendations were initially either accepted or being further considered by the Government.
The response to the latest consultation has seen the Government action three of the initial Review recommendations. In summary, this means that the Government:
- Will be mandating the topics of the Modern Slavery statement for companies.
- Introducing a single deadline for publication of all statements in a single public registry allowing for greater transparency and scrutiny.
- Requiring public bodies to publish their statements as well.
To date, this means that 15 of the Independent Review recommendations we played a part in shaping have been accepted (nine in full, six in part) by the Government. This is a big win for fighting modern slavery on a systemic level here in the UK!
